Plans take shape for 2010 ArtPrize in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Plans are taking shape for this fall's ArtPrize competition in Grand Rapids.

The 19-day event runs Sept. 22 through Oct. 10.

Organizers are holding venue registration from March 15 to April 15 and interested artists may sign up from April 19 to May 27. Artists will be matched with a venue to display their work from June 1 to July 1.

Last year's 18-day event offered $250,000 to the winner and $449,000 in total prize money. The event became an instant hit and it appeared to provide a boost to local businesses and to Grand Rapids' cachet as an art destination.

The ArtPrize winners were chosen "American Idol" style by the voting public, who made their picks through the event's Web site or by sending text messages from cell phones.
