Cool weather brings hot music to Grand Rapids

Despite high winds, rain and the looming possibility of snow, Grand Rapids has a lot of hot bands heating up the November music scene.

The Intersection begins a rock-filled month with The Thug In Me is You Tour, featuring Falling in Reverse, Enter Shikari, I See Stars, and Letlive. Headlining the night with songs from their album “The Drug in me is You”, is Falling in Reverse, a post-hardcore band from Las Vegas. Promotional posters are announcing “very special surprise guests” for the Nov. 1 show at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $17.50 in advance, or $20 at the door.

The Intersection chills out on Nov. 11 with Badfish: A Tribute to Sublime, which features the bands Scotty Don’t, and local groups The Dockside Fever and Three Cents Short. The bands will pay a musical tribute to west-coast trio Sublime, a punk rock band from Long Beach, Calif. that split up when vocalist Bradley Nowell died in 1996. Tickets are $15 and doors open at 6:30 p.m. for the all-ages show.

That same night, hard rock will take over the stage at The Orbit Room as metal band Dethklok takes the stage accompanied by The Black Dahlia Murder, All That Remains, and Machine Head. Dethklok, a band created for the popular Adult Swim cartoon “Metalocalypse,” might come off as a bit unconventional, but is made up of actual musicians. They’re set to play songs featured on the show and others off of their albums. Tickets start at $35 for the 6:30 p.m. show.

World-famous rock and folk musician Bob Dylan comes to Van Andel Arena on Nov. 12 for a throwback concert after performing his bluesy tunes for more than 50 years. Dylan’s show will feature a mixture of classic songs and ones from his latest album, “Tempest,” which was released last September. After a highly successful European tour, Dylan is continuing in the U.S., along with his band and special guest Mark Knopfler, who has worked with a number of famous artists including Eric Clapton and Van Morrison. Tickets start at $48 for the 7:30 p.m. show.

For all the Grand Valley State University country fans, Carrie Underwood will be strutting her stuff at Van Andel Arena on Nov. 15 as part of The Blown Away Tour. At age 29, Underwood has already sold 14 million albums, and has been the only country music artist in history to have 10 number one singles from her first two albums alone. Underwood is planning on donating $1 from each ticket sold to the Red Cross Disaster Relief fund. Her performance includes special guest Hunter Hayes. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. with tickets starting at $43.50.

November keeps on rocking as Motion City Soundtrack stops by the Intersection on Nov. 17 with special guests Jukebox the Ghost and Now, Now. MCS, a pop-rock band from Minneapolis, Minn., released their latest album this past summer and continues a nation-wide tour. The show is $18 in advance and $20 at the door.

Not even a year after they last performed in Grand Rapids, the alternative rock band Go Radio is back to play the Intersection on Nov. 27 as part of their Go to Hell Tour in support of their newest album, “Close the Distance.” Since lead vocalist Jason Lancaster left Mayday Parade in 2007, Go Radio has been gaining fans. The 6:30 p.m. show features special guests Paradise Fears, Stages & Stereos, and Another October. Tickets are $12 in advance or $17 at the door for the all-ages concert.
