All 13 GLIAC coaches participated in the balloting, but were unable to vote for their own team. GVSU landed 10 first-place votes to go with a league-high 141 points.

Michigan Technological University (123 points), Ohio Dominican University (112), Ferris State University (107) and Ashland University (105) rounded out the top five.

GVSU, which has secured the outright GLIAC title seven times in a row, was also chosen as the No. 1 team in the NSCAA preseason poll on Aug. 7 after winning the 2013 NCAA Division II National Championship.

The Lakers will be looking to push their Division II record for consecutive home victories to 64 in their season opener on Sept. 5 against No. 5 Quincy University at 7 p.m.
