Quick Hits: Number of Lakers earn GLIAC awards

GVSU’s Spencer earns GLIAC honors

Grand Valley State senior running back Kirk Spencer was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week after his 252 all-purpose yard outing in the Lakers’ 65-23 win against Lake Erie last weekend.

Spencer rushed for four touchdowns, and threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jamie Potts in GVSU’s win. Spencer rushed for 164 and added another 73 yards on kick returns.

Laker soccer players sweep GLIAC weekly awards

The No. 7 Grand Valley State soccer team swept both weekend GLIAC matchups as well as weekly GLIAC awards thanks to offensive outbursts and defensive lockdowns.

Junior Jayma Martin earned GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors, after scoring two goals and dishing out five assists in GVSU’s 4-0 win over Tiffin and 10-0 win over Malone.

Junior Clare Carlson matched her classmate by being tabbed GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week. Carlson led the Laker defense to back-to-back conference shutouts, as the unit allowed just four shots in a three-game span. Carlson also flashes offensive skills, notching three goals of her own in the stretch.

Volleyball’s Brower wins Player of the Week

Freshman Staci Brower helped the No. 22 Lakers achieve two road sweeps in Ohio over the weekend to earn GLIAC North Division Player of the Week for the Grand Valley State volleyball team.

The middle blocker had a .404 hitting percentage and recorded 28 kills against both Malone and Walsh to help GVSU roll through its GLIAC opponents.

GVSU hockey teams busy at Georgetown Ice Arena

The Grand Valley State Division II men’s ice hockey club will be on the road over the weekend, but Laker fans will still have plenty of opportunities to take in GVSU hockey over the weekend.

The men’s Division III squad plays at Oakland University on Friday night, but return home to take on the Grizzlies again on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 4:30 p.m.

Following the men’s game, the GVSU Division I women’s hockey team kicks is slated to kick off its season with a 6:30 p.m. tilt at home against Aquinas College.

The Division III men’s team will also host a home game against the University of Michigan on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
