GV men’s DIII club hockey wins, ties against Purdue

The Grand Valley State Division III men’s hockey club finished a two-game series against Purdue with a win and a tie. The Lakers trounced the Boilermakers 6-2 Friday, Oct. 14 and tied 3-3 Saturday, Oct. 15.

In the first game, defenseman Derek Simon opened up the scoring for the Lakers with a long shot on a pass from Alex Bjork. Purdue answered back with two goals before the period’s end to put the Lakers down one heading into the second.

Purdue’s lead did not last long. Forward Tyler Stoller provided the equalizer for the Lakers, and freshman Bronson Foote scored on an assist from Mark Janiga to give GVSU the lead.

GVSU kept the foot on the gas in the third period with a second goal from Stoller early in the period. Mitch Lawton and Foote provided some insurance for the Lakers with goals of their own.

In the second game, GVSU jumped out to an early lead on the Boilermakers. Lawton capitalized on a breakaway opportunity with a goal, and Alex Siroky scored before the intermission.

After a goal early in the second period for the Lakers, Purdue answered back with two goals before the final period. The Boilermakers tied the game 3-3 in the third period, and that score would end up being the final.

The Lakers will be back in action next weekend with a home-and-home series against Davenport Oct. 21-22.
