GVSU to host seminar on classroom inclusion

Grand Valley State University will host a one-day seminar on the topic of being inclusive in the classroom and in the community Friday, Nov. 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m in the Kirkhof Center Grand River Room. Deepa Iyer, senior fellow at the Center for Social Inclusion in New York City will lead the event.

Registration for the event costs $50 for students, faculty and staff and $99 for community members.  Those interested in attending can register by Friday, Oct. 27 at www.gvsu.edu/counsel/mcseminar.

Michigan Sociological Association annual conference to take place this weekend

Grand Valley State University will host the 2017 Michigan Sociological Association Conference from Friday, Oct. 27, to Saturday, Oct. 28, at the L.V. Eberhard Center, Room 201.  

Friday’s presentation will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Paul Roof will be the featured presenter.  The presentation, "The Beer Can Professor: A Man, a Can and a City," will address issues such as sustainability in the brewing industry. Saturday’s presentations will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

GVSU international students to host Halloween carnival

The Grand Valley State University international students will host a Halloween carnival Thursday, Oct. 26, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center, Room 2266. Festivities will include pumpkin carving, treats, costumes and prizes to win.  

Majors fair to take place next week

Grand Valley State University will host a majors fair Wednesday, Nov. 1, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center Grand River Room. The event is designed to help undecided students explore the various options that GVSU offers. Students will be put in touch with faculty members to discuss potential career paths. GVSU alumni will also be in attendance to discuss their respective paths after graduation.

Genetics research discussion to take place

The Sam Rhine Annual Genetics Update Seminar will take place Monday, Oct. 30, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center Grand River Room. The seminar will discuss the newest discoveries and applications in the field. Those interested in learning more about the event can visit www.samrhine.com.

Grand Rapids sees another rise in average gas prices

According to GasBuddy’s most recent survey Sunday, Oct. 22, the average price-per-gallon of gas in Grand Rapids has risen to $2.60, 16 cents more than the national average. This is a 9-cent increase from the week before. The Grand Rapids area has seen a 27-cent increase over the past month, while the national average has fallen 12 cents in the same time period.
