An evening of a cappella

A cappella group Backtrack will be coming to Grand Valley State University Wednesday, Nov. 15, for an evening of a cappella. The award-winning group from New York City has garnered more than 8.7 million views on YouTube with around 100,000 subscribers.

Starting at 9 p.m., the evening will feature musical selections chosen and performed by the group. Backtrack has won several awards over the last two years, including three awards from the 2017 International Championship of A Capella OPEN.

‘My Life as a Zucchini’ film showing

As part of the Tournées French Film Festival, Grand Valley State University, in conjunction with Grand Rapids Community College and their respective French sections, will be co-presenting the film “My Life as a Zucchini,” or “Ma vie de courgette.” The showing will be held on GVSU’s Pew Campus in the DeVos Center’s Loosemore Auditorium on Wednesday, Nov. 15, starting at 7 p.m.

“My Life as a Zucchini” is a Swiss-French stop-motion animated feature film aimed at adults. The film will be shown in French but will offer English subtitles so that all attendees can understand the storyline. The event will be free, and all students, guests and members of the greater Grand Rapids community are invited to attend.

Hunger Banquet set for Wednesday, Nov. 15

A Hunger Banquet is set to be held Wednesday, Nov. 15, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center, Room 2270. Bringing attention to how global hunger and poverty can be combated, the banquet will offer a time for group discussion after the meal is served.

To spark conversation, attending Grand Valley State University students will be divided into three classes, with each class being offered different meals, accommodations and seating arrangements. Afterward, the groups will be asked how the treatment made them feel and attempt to discuss the issue of worldwide hunger.

Afro-Cuban and Latin percussion event to be held Wednesday, Nov. 15

Joshua Dunigan, drummer for Latin rock band Cabildo and Afrobeat band AfroZuma, will be visiting Grand Valley State University on Wednesday, Nov. 15, from 1 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. in the Holton-Hooker Learning and Living Center Multipurpose Room (121A) for a LIB 100- and 201-approved event about world percussion.

For the past 15 years, Dunigan has used his passion for world music to perform and teach Afro-Cuban and Latino percussion, both with public school students and with adults who take his classes. Performing live shows in Grand Rapids, Dunigan takes the traditional rhythms of Cuba, Brazil and Andean states and puts them in a contemporary setting.
