Quick hits: Men's tennis shuts out Hope College, track & field wraps up regular season of indoor competition
GV men’s tennis shuts out Hope College 9-0
The Grand Valley State men's tennis team defeated Hope College by a score of 9-0 on Saturday, Feb. 17. This was the second straight match where the Lakers defeated their opponent by a score of 9-0.
In singles actions, Sebastien Lescoulie won in dominating fashion with a score of 6-2, 6-2, from the No. 1 position, while Jack Geissler had a strong performance win from the No. 2 spot, 6-0, 6-3. Nicholas Urban and D.J. Colantone won their matches from the No. 3 and No. 4 slots by scores of 6-0, 6-1, and 6-3, 6-0. Marcus Muniz Infante and Alex Lescoulie also tallied victories for the Lakers from No 5. and No. 6 singles, after they won 6-3, 6-0, and 6-1, 6-1.
The Lakers were just as impressive in doubles play on Saturday afternoon. The duo of Lescoulie and Drew Coleman won 8-4 from the No. 1 doubles pairing, while Colantone and Geissler had a strong performance from the No. 2 spot and won 8-3. Urban and Muniz Infante would earn the 9th point for the Lakers as they won from No. 3 doubles by a score of 8-2.
GV hosts final regular-season indoor track & field meet
The Grand Valley State men and women's track and field teams wrapped up their final indoor meet on Friday, Feb. 16, and put up 14 provisional marks.
On the women's side, the Lakers saw nine athletes hit provisional marks on Friday afternoon. Madison Goen ran a provisional time of 4:58.98 in the mile and earned a second-place finish, while Breanna Luba placed first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.76. In the field events, women's pole vault saw three Lakers hit provisional marks, as Elli Kimes placed first after she cleared a provisional height of 3.73 meters, followed by Lucy Buckholz and Sara Overbeek with heights of 3.58 meters, which were the second best heights during the meet. Dajsha Avery had a strong performance in the shot put, as she threw a distance of 14.31 en route to a first-place finish.
Three more Laker women hit NCAA provisional marks in the weight throw, as Bobbie Goodwin led the way for the Lakers with a first-place finish after she threw a distance of 19.31 meters. Brianna DeSappio and Jessica Rockwell both hit provisional marks of 17.13 meters and 16.87 meters.
On the men's side, there were five NCAA qualifying marks during the meet. Justin Scavarda hit qualifying marks in the shot put and the weight throw. In the shot put, Scavarda hit a distance of 16.43 meters en route to a first-place finish. In the weight throw, he hit a distance of 18.20 meters, which was the fifth best mark at the meet. In the pole vault, Jacob Battani cleared 5.02 meters while taking first place, and Alex Peskin hit a mark of 4.72 meters. Tyler Kirkwood was the sole men's track athlete who ran a provisional mark after he finished first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.15.
Next week, GVSU will host the 2017-18 GLIAC Indoor Championships, which will be held Saturday, Feb. 24, and Sunday, Feb. 25, starting at 9 a.m.
