GVSU lacrosse defeats McKendree 19-13

For the sixth game in a row, the No. 16 Grand Valley State lacrosse team won, grabbing a 19-13 victory over the McKendree University Bearcats in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action on Saturday, March 31, at the GVSU lacrosse field.

Three Lakers had hat tricks in the contest, led by five goals from Meghan Datema, who also controlled 10 draws in the match. With the win, the Lakers improve to 7-2 on the year and 5-0 in the conference, while McKendree falls to 2-7 overall and 1-3 in league play.

Despite the six-goal victory, the Lakers were outshot 38-35 in the match. Nevertheless, Brianna DeMilia made 17 saves between the pipes for GVSU. The 17 saves were the most in a single game in Laker program history. The Lakers were pesky in the neutral zone, holding McKendree to just 16 successful clear attempts in 25 chances and drawing 29 fouls on the Bearcats while committing 16 of their own.

The Lakers scored the first six goals of the match to take a commanding lead eight minutes in. Ashley Bailey scored three of the Lakers’ first 12 goals, including a free-position goal with 10 minutes left in the first half to open a double-digit lead (12-2) and start a running clock. The Lakers would lead by 9 at the break and hold off McKendree in the second half to secure the victory.

The Lakers are now 2-0 on their home field and look to keep the good times rolling on Wednesday, April 4, when they host the Tiffin University Dragons in GLIAC action at 7 p.m.

GVSU softball weekend contests rescheduled

In a battle against the Grand Valley State softball team and the weather, mother nature was victorious. The Lakers had to reschedule both of their road contests against Tiffin University and Wayne State.

The GVSU softball team’s doubleheader at Tiffin, originally scheduled for Friday, March 30, has been rescheduled due to inclement weather in the area. The Lakers will now travel to Tiffin on Thursday, April 12, for a 2 p.m. start.

The GVSU softball doubleheader at Wayne State in Detroit, Michigan, originally scheduled for Saturday, March 31, has been rescheduled for Monday, April 2, due to inclement weather on the east side of the state. The Lakers will head to Detroit for a 2 p.m. start to the doubleheader before returning to Allendale for another doubleheader the following day (Tuesday, April 3) against Davenport starting at 3:30 p.m.

GVSU club rowing competes in Marietta InvitationalĀ

The Laker Navy traveled to Marietta, Ohio, to participate in the Marietta Invitational on Saturday, March 24, and Sunday, March 25. This was a double dual race between Marietta College, GVSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma City and Notre Dame.

The men’s varsity 8+ had some hard racing with Notre Dame and Marietta, falling to them by 2.3 seconds and 6.8 seconds, respectively. The men’s varsity A 4+ took first over OKC by 0.66 seconds.

The women’s varsity 4+ took second to OSU by 19.88 seconds, still placing easily ahead of OKC.

The novice men’s 8+ fell to Notre Dame and Marietta’s second varsity 8+ by 9.19 seconds and 14.63 seconds, respectively.

Against Marietta’s 2V, the novice men caught a boat-stopping crab at 150m to go before the line. The outcome was not affected, but the margin was.

The novice women’s 4+ raced hard and took second to OSU’s varsity 4+ easily and placed first over OKC’s varsity 4+ by 9.33 seconds. The men’s novice/varsity 2x took second easily over OKC’s top 2x but closed the gap by four seconds in their second race with them.
