Transit in Michigan

While we were away from ‘The Valley’ over break, a lot happened in the world of public transportation for Michigan. In the land of the Dutch, West Michigan, things are looking good. Grand Rapids got federal money to press ahead on its bus rapid transit line along Division and the Rapid will be improving services throughout the system. In the motor city, things are not looking quite so well. Detroit nixed the idea of light rail along Woodward and the suburb of Troy turned away $8.4 million in federal money to build a bus/train station because the mayor worried about the cost of keeping the lights on.

Detroit's fate tied to state

For many in West Michigan, the economic and social problems in Detroit seem distant and irrelevant to our well being. Some may even take the opportunity to criticize the ability of those on the east side to run such a large city, while patting themselves and their neighbors on the back for the recent success Grand Rapids has enjoyed.

Somehow I happen to live with four roommates who are reasonably intelligent and appear on track to be productive members of society. Even though one of them decided to get hit by a car last year, they are all upstanding young men and seem like they will do well despite our troubled economy.

You say potato I say Toh-Mah-Toe, you say Job Creator, I say wealthy person who is no more special than any other Joe (or Jane). The debate that started last December as the Bush tax cuts were set to expire has poked its head around the corner once again. Should people in the top few percent of money makers be revered in the tax code as creators of employment, or should they be treated like everybody else and lose some of their money saving perks?

Poor House

As students we will always complain about being in the poor house; sometimes we even say it after plopping down serious money for frivolous purchases. Some of us really are working through tight financial constraints, others simply don’t know how to manage their money. Through my four years here, I’ve seen more students who throw more of their money to the wind than those who struggle to rub two quarters together.
