V for Victory: Junior guard makes her mark

The thing that sets the great teams apart from the elite teams, though, is having that one player who impacts the game without lighting up the scoreboard. Think Draymond Green – the glue guy.  At 17-2, the No. 15 ranked Grand Valley State women’s hoops squad is looking primed to make a run for a NCAA title and while there are players who light up the scoreboard and compile stars, they would not be in this position if it weren’t for redshirt junior guard Victoria Hedemark.

Offense reignites as GVSU women's basketball crush Davenport

After seeing their 14-game win streak end on the road against Northern Michigan last weekend, the No. 15 ranked Grand Valley State women’s basketball team began what they hope will become a new streak as they beat the Davenport Panthers 82-53 in Caledonia, Mich. on Saturday, Jan. 26. With the victory, the Lakers are now 17-2 (10-1 GLIAC) this season.

GVSU basketball defeated twice by Michigan Tech, Northern Michigan

The Grand Valley State men’s basketball team came away from their road trip to the Upper Peninsula with two more losses, losing to Michigan Tech in overtime 91-87 on Thursday, Jan. 17, before losing to Northern Michigan 71-61 on Saturday, Jan. 19. Thursday’s game against the Huskies looked destined for a Laker victory in the beginning as GVSU held a lead over MTU for almost the entire first half, concluding the period with a commanding 40-28 lead thanks in part to Hunter Hale and Jeremiah Ferguson, who combined for 21 points and four assists in the opening twenty minutes.

Defense hoists GVSU women's basketball to undefeated home weekend

The No. 9 ranked Grand Valley State women’s basketball team picked up their 12th and 13th straight wins by beating the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals 64-46 on Thursday, Jan. 10 and the Northwood Timberwolves 67-51 on Saturday, Jan. 12. Both games began at 6 p.m. at GVSU’s Fieldhouse Arena, and both games extended the team’s streak of double digit wins, now at 12 consecutive as their record stands at 15-1 (8-0 GLIAC.)

Transition play: GVSU soccer star takes up basketball

It takes serious talent to be a two-sport athlete in college. While many people play multiple sports in high school, they’re usually only good enough to advance and play at a high level in one during their college years.  Coming out of Holt High School in Holt, Mich., Tara Lierman knew she was a talented at both soccer and basketball, but made an early decision to strictly pursue soccer at Grand Valley State. Her decision paid off, as the midfielder went on to play in 100 games for the Lakers while starting in 74 of them, scoring 29 goals and handing out 23 assists. GVSU went 91-8-3 with a three national championship appearances, one national title and four GLIAC titles. Individually, Lierman was named to multiple All-American teams and maintained excellent status in the classroom. However, hoops fever returned for the soccer star and she made an executive decision.

GVSU women's basketball caps off break with wins over Ferris State, Lake Superior State

After finishing 3-0 during the holiday season, the N0. 10 Grand Valley State women’s basketball team played two significant games in the final week of winter break, defeating rival the Ferris State Bulldogs on Thursday, Jan. 3 at home 76-61 and then heading out on the road for their first away game in over a month to take down the Lake Superior State Lakers 71-50 on Saturday, Jan. 5 in a rare home-and-away weekend.
