Women’s club hockey swept by MSU

The Grand Valley State University women’s club ice hockey team was beaten twice over the weekend while competing in a home-and-home set against Michigan State University. GVSU hung around in a close game at the Georgetown Ice Arena on Saturday night, but MSU was too much to handle offensively and escaped with a 5-3 win. MSU also eked out a 2-1 victory on Sunday at the Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing, Mich. The Lakers will return to action for another home-and-home test against the University of Michigan on Jan.

Club wrestling team spars MCC in benefit dual

The Grand Valley State University club wrestling team travelled to Reeths-Puffer High School on Wednesday night to compete against Muskegon Community College in the Rick Stenberg Memorial Wrestling Duals, a fundraiser honoring the father of two MCC wrestlers whose father recently died of cancer. All proceeds from the event went to a scholarship fund for a future Reeths-Puffer student. GVSU lost in the dual by a score of 31-18, but notched a pair of victories as sophomore Tyler Dempsey won a 3-2 decision in the 141 weight class while senior Kyle Horr took home a 5-3 victory in the 149 weight class. The team is scheduled to return to action this weekend to compete in the National Duals in Dalton, Ga.

The Grand Valley State University women’s basketball team will jockey with a pair of GLIAC contenders during its trip to the Upper Peninsula with an opportunity to better its fourth-place spot in the North Division standings. GVSU (8-4, 6-2) will start with a matchup against third-place Northern Michigan University (10-2, 7-1) tonight at 5:30 p.m.

Club dodgeball team begins 2014 with two wins

The Grand Valley State University club dodgeball team started the new year off right by winning a pair of games against NCDA rivals in the Chicago Dodgeball Open on Sunday according to the team’s Twitter account. GVSU defeated Michigan State University 5-0 and James Madison University 3-1. The Lakers, who have been NCDA champions five times since the 2007 season, will finish their campaign with a home-and-home set against MSU before a trip to nationals at Ohio State University on April 12.
