Fifth-year Woodson tallies career high at Walsh

Senior point guard Rob Woodson of the Grand Valley State University men’s basketball team had an impressive performance in a 75-66 loss at Walsh University on Thursday night in North Canton, Ohio as evidenced by a career-high point total. 41 Lakers named to Academic Excellence Teams

A total of 41 Grand Valley State University student athletes across seven varsity sports turned in an impressive fall season in the classroom and were rewarded on Friday with a spot on the 2013 GLIAC Fall All-Academic Excellence Teams according to a release from the conference. Academic Excellence Teams are comprised of student athletes that meet criteria and hold a cumulative GPA of 3.50-4.0. The GVSU men’s cross country team led the way with 10 honorees, followed by the women’s cross country team (nine), football team (seven), women’s soccer team (five), women’s volleyball team (five), women’s tennis team (four) and men’s golf team (one). Many student athletes also earned a place on the All-Academic Teams, which acknowledges those with a GPA of 3.0-3.49.

Aiken, Lound, Wolters named All-Americans

Three members of the Grand Valley State University women’s volleyball team were recently named to 2013 All-America teams after helping GVSU finish its season with a 31-4 record and an outright GLIAC title. Junior outside hitter Abby Aiken, the 2013 GLIAC Player of the Year and the Daktronics, Inc. Midwest Region Player of the Year, was named to the Daktronics, All-America Second team and was an AVCA honorable mention selection. Sophomore middle hitter Kaleigh Lound was named an AVCA Third-Team All-America honoree after finishing the season with the most blocks, block assists and total blocks in the GLIAC. Junior setter Kaitlyn Wolters joined Aiken as an AVCA honorable mention honoree.

Football finishes third in final AFCA poll

The Grand Valley State University football team capped off its season as the third-ranked team in the nation according to the AFCA Coaches’ Poll after advancing to the NCAA Division II National semifinals before falling 27-13 to eventual National Champion Northwest Missouri State University. GVSU (12-3) also garnered a number of individual accolades after its season came to a close. Senior center Matt Armstrong was tabbed as the 2013 Rimington Award winner (nation’s top offensive center) and was runner-up for the Gene Upshaw Award (nation’s top interior lineman). He was listed as a First-Team All-American by the AFCA, Daktronics, Inc. and the Associated Press Little America Team. Sophomore tight end Jamie Potts was also selected as a Daktronics First-Team All-American.

DiIanni named NSCAA Coach of the Year

Grand Valley State University women’s soccer head coach Dave DiIanni was recently named the 2013 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Women’s National Coach of the Year after his team won its third NCAA Division II title in five seasons. GVSU (24-0-1) notched three of the second-best, single-season marks in Division II history with a .840 shutout percentage, a .159 goals-against average and a 13-game shutout streak. Five of Dilanni’s players earned a spot on the Daktronics NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer All-America Team, and four of which were first team selections. DiIanni’s career record of 221-18-18 is good enough for the the third-highest winning percentage (.895) in NCAA history.

Baltes named Women’s National Coach of the Year

The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Thursday that Grand Valley State University cross country head coach Jerry Baltes has been named the Division II Women’s National Coach of the Year for the third time in four seasons. Baltes led GVSU to a 2013 Division II National Championship.
