GVSU boxing club’s Batenburg takes home state championship

“I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion,” once said former heavyweight boxing champion and American sports icon Muhammad Ali. For Sarah Rae Batenburg, these words from one of boxing’s greatest rang true leading up to her Michigan Golden Gloves state championship fight on April 13. Months of practice, lifting, conditioning and dieting prepared Batenburg for the moment where she would have the opportunity to take home the Michigan Golden Gloves in her weight bracket.

GVSU piles it on early and often in dominant win at yearly ‘Pack the George’ Event

The Grand Valley State University Lakers DII club hockey team started off their night with a little flair before the puck dropped against Michigan State on Friday, Jan. 25. The lights dimmed, a buzz flowed through the stands and an announcer’s voice rang out over the PA system at Georgetown Ice Arena as GVSU’s starting line was introduced. The energy from the arena seemed to carry over to the players on the ice as the Lakers progressed through warm ups.

Trine halts GVSU dominance, hands DII hockey first loss in weekend split

In a season where the play on the ice has looked fairly easy thus far, the Grand Valley State DII men’s club hockey team faced their toughest test of the year against the Trine Thunder on Friday, Nov. 2. In the words of head coach Carl Trosien, GVSU did not come out sharp and ready to play against Trine. “I think we came out a little flat, a little unprepared,” Trosien said. “They kind of controlled the first period and we got out of there 0-0 and then in the second period we made some special teams mistakes that allowed them to gain some breathing room.”
