The Grand Valley State University Lakers DII club hockey team started off their night with a little flair before the puck dropped against Michigan State on Friday, Jan. 25. The lights dimmed, a buzz flowed through the stands and an announcer’s voice rang out over the PA system at Georgetown Ice Arena as GVSU’s starting line was introduced. The energy from the arena seemed to carry over to the players on the ice as the Lakers progressed through warm ups.

The Grand Valley State men’s club hockey team swept the Indiana Hoosiers this weekend with 5-4 and 3-2 victories on Friday, Jan. 18 and Saturday, Jan. 19. The Lakers entered the weekend on a six-game losing skid, dating back to Dec. 1, but after back-to-back wins on the road, the team appears to playing their best hockey of the season.

“The biggest thing we get out of it is seeing the kids smile. And hopefully we will also see that the lessons we're teaching, not only the fundamentals of hockey, but also the life values are sinking in,” said National Hockey League Hall of Fame Defenseman Bobby Orr. That smile – and the fundamentals that came with it – was present on former Grand Valley State forward Tommy Carey’s face from a young age.

It’s 2011 and the Grand Valley State University men’s DII club hockey team has just taken the ice at the SAP Center in San Jose, Cal., home to the National Hockey League’s San Jose Sharks. Once warm ups concluded and the final buzzer sounded, GVSU had come away with a 6-1 victory over local rival Michigan State, claiming the ACHA DII National Championship. This was the first of many national championships that the newly hired graduate assistant for club sports would experience.

In a season where the play on the ice has looked fairly easy thus far, the Grand Valley State DII men’s club hockey team faced their toughest test of the year against the Trine Thunder on Friday, Nov. 2. In the words of head coach Carl Trosien, GVSU did not come out sharp and ready to play against Trine. “I think we came out a little flat, a little unprepared,” Trosien said. “They kind of controlled the first period and we got out of there 0-0 and then in the second period we made some special teams mistakes that allowed them to gain some breathing room.”

Through four games the Lakers have four wins in dominating fashion, outscoring their opponents this season by a margin of 38-8. In their games against Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill., GVSU used their depth and speed to overwhelm the Flyers on Friday, Oct. 19 8-2, and again on Saturday in the finale of the doubleheader 11-1.

The Grand Valley State University Division II club hockey team will have a different look this season. After nine seasons, former head coach Mike Forbes has retired and the team now looks to new head coach Carl Trosien to carry on the legacy of the program. Trosien talks about the hiring process with GVSU, is very excited to apply his leadership to this talented program.

Crowds of students filled the streets as they made their way to Grand Valley State University’s annual Campus Life Night on Tuesday, Sept. 4. Over 400 organizations lined up their tables in Lot H to represent their favorite groups. Campus Life Night is a student organization fair that provides students with the chance to explore the various clubs and organizations GVSU has to offer. Students also were able to meet campus department staff and learn how they could benefit from GVSU’s countless resources.
