Current events explored at Talk Back Tuesday

The Grand Valley State University Center for Women and Gender Equality was almost filled to capacity during the first Talk Back Tuesday of the school year.  On Tuesday, Sept. 11 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., the GVSU Center for Women and Gender Equality held this year’s first monthly Talk Back Tuesday in the Kirkhof Center. More than 15 students filled their plates with chicken, fruit and candy to join the center in discussing current news topics regarding gender equality issues.

Writing Department welcomes authors to GVSU

The Grand Valley State University Writing Department will welcome both established and up-and-coming writers to campus throughout the school year for the annual Writers Series.  This year’s Writers Series features eight distinguished authors at six individual events taking place between Monday, Sept. 17 and Tuesday, Apr. 9. Each event is open to the public and includes a writing craft talk (a discussion about the craft of writing), and a reading. Authors will also visit classes so students can have the opportunity to learn about artistic career paths, the art of writing and other invaluable tips from distinguished writers.

GR College Week events aim to help students develop sense of community

During the week of Sept. 10 to 16, Grand Rapids hosted the third annual GR College Week, an event aimed toward helping students from all colleges in the area connect with one another, discover job opportunities and become more familiar with the Grand Rapids area.  Students from GVSU, WMU, Aquinas, Calvin, Cornerstone, Kuyper and other institutions attended several events aimed at helping students step outside of their comfort zone, establish connections and make new friends.

Grand Rapids welcomes college students during GR College Week

Grand Rapids welcomes college students to explore the city during the annual GR College Week. Monday, Sept. 10 through Sunday, Sept. 16, the city will open its arms to all college students within the area. It is a week designed to get students out and about in the city of Grand Rapids. GR College Week is not just for Grand Valley State University college students; it is a joint effort between the city and all of the different colleges that are located nearby. Colleges such as GRCC, Calvin College, Ferris State University and many more are welcome to participate in the events as well.

Grand Valley Office of Multicultural Affairs to host Intercultural Student Reception

Wednesday, Sept. 12 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., the annual Intercultural Student Reception is being held in the Kirkhof Center’s Grand River Room. This event provides an opportunity for GVSU faculty, staff and student organizations to connect with the student body. More than 20 student organizations will be present to share information about their club and encourage visitors to join. Many faculty members will also be attending the reception to inform new students about the numerous offices and resources on campus that may be beneficial throughout the school year.

American Legion Post 459 to host Save Our Shoes Fundraiser

This month, Post 459 is partnering with Funds2Orgs to bring the Save our Shoes fundraiser, an event that helps both the Post and those in need. The Post is collecting gently worn pairs of shoes, sending them to the needy, and then getting reimbursed for what they collect. Contributions to the fundraiser are therefore helping both veterans and those in need.

Van Andel's Summer Summit to take place at GV Alumni House

It’s a whole new world out there wearing the face of technology in all businesses, including international ones. The Van Andel Global Trade Center is hosting its inaugural Summer Summit to discuss a range of hot topics in the international business world.  The Van Andel Global Trade Center is an outreach unit at the Seidman College of Business and that was started in 1999.

Mental Health Foundation of West Michigan to Host Walk for Mental Health

May has been mental health month for decades, and one local organization has created an event to celebrate and bring awareness to this month and the stigmas surrounding mental health. The 16th annual Stomp Out Stigma Walk for mental health will be taking place this Saturday, May 19.  The walk, hosted by the Mental Health Foundation of West Michigan, starts at the Grand Valley State University Seward parking lot in Grand Rapids, and will span three miles along the Riverwalk. There is also a shortcut available for those who wish to walk one mile instead of three.
