Student senate to host week of activities ahead of elections

As the end of the winter semester at Grand Valley State University approaches, so does the time for electing new senators and cabinet members for the GVSU student senate. To help create excitement for the upcoming elections, as well as provide necessary information to those interested in running for an open seat, student senate will be hosting Student Senate Week beginning Monday, Feb. 26.

The real cost of Presidents' Ball

A longstanding Grand Valley State University tradition designed to be a celebration of both the university president and the student senate president, Presidents’ Ball is the largest (non-athletic) student event at GVSU that consistently attracts more than 4,000 students and community members. However, what many attendees may not know is the cost for creating such a grand night has totaled close to a quarter million dollars the past two years. They also may not know that, rather than running a profit, as university officials told the student senate, the event lost thousands of dollars in 2016 and 2017.

GVSU alumna running for state representative

A recent Grand Valley State University graduate is hoping to effect change in the state of Michigan by running for public office. Melina Brann, who holds a master’s of social work (MSW) from the College of Community and Public Service, is currently campaigning to be a part of the Michigan House of Representatives for District 68, which encompasses much of the Lansing area.

VP of enrollment development creates scholarship for incoming students

According to Debt.org, 70 percent of college graduates in 2017 left with student loan debt averaging $38,000. To help students from working families afford college and avoid taking on such an unhealthy amount of debt, Lynn (Chick) Blue, vice president for enrollment development at Grand Valley State University, has developed the Blue Working Family Endowed Scholarship.

Board of Trustees approves graduate program in social innovation

A group of faculty members at Grand Valley State University recently took big steps in its effort to implement a new graduate program in the Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies. The GVSU Board of Trustees approved the college’s request for a Master of Arts in social innovation, as well as the College of Health Professions’ request for a new Bachelor of Arts in communication sciences and disorders on Friday, Feb. 2.
