Six-won-six: GVSU handles Dixie State, remains unbeaten

On a cool fall Homecoming evening in Allendale, the No. 2 ranked Grand Valley State Lakers football team defeated the visiting Dixie State Trailblazers 35-14 in the first ever match-up between the Michigan and Utah schools behind a stout defensive effort to improve to 6-0. Before Head Coach Matt Mitchell ushered out the second unit defense in the fourth quarter, GVSU had held the Trailblazers to only 173 yards on 55 plays – an average of only 3.1 yards per play – with a measly 25 carries for 21 yards on the ground. Both of DSU’s touchdown came in the fourth quarter against the backups.

2018 GVSU Athletic Hall of Fame Class inducted

20 consecutive GLIAC Cups. 17 consecutive DII National Directors Cup top-two finishes. When it comes to athletics at GVSU, the statistics are often gaudy, but gaudy stats come with the territory. On Friday, Oct. 5, GVSU’s athletic department hosted its 38th annual Charles H. Irwin Club Dinner and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The class of 2018 featured seven new members to GVSU’s Athletics Hall of Fame.

GVSU volleyball splits weekend road games

From one valley to the other and back up north, the Grand Valley State volleyball team had a weekend jam packed full of digs, sets and kills, resulting in a loss against Saginaw Valley State and a win against Lake Superior State. The Lakers had a tough loss to Saginaw Valley State on Friday, Oct. 5 (3-0) with set scores of 16-25, 23-25 and 23-25.

GVSU soccer comes out on top against Michigan Tech

Throughout the first half of Friday’s game, it was a back and forth battle between the Lakers and Huskies, both aggressively trying to find the back of the net. With long, slick grass, some players found trouble getting their footing, adding difficulty to executing opportunities to score. Head coach Jeff Hosler encouraged his players to continue playing through the less-than-ideal field as both teams were fighting the same weather.

GVSU vs Dixie State Football Quick Recap

The Grand Valley State football team remained undefeated on the season with a win on Saturday, Oct. 6, beating the Dixie State Trailblazers 35-14. With the win, the Lakers improve to 6-0 on the season. Quarterback Bart Williams threw for 237 yards, completing 57 percent of his passes and throwing three touchdowns, all going to Austin Paritee. Paritee also gained 121 yards receiving on six receptions.

Cooperate to dominate: GVSU soccer stays undefeated, beats Purdue Northwest 10-0

Domination has been the name of the game for the Grand Valley State women’s soccer team, and as they reach the midway point of their season, they continued to dominate on the field this past Friday, Sept. 28, traveling to Purdue-Northwest and beating the Pride 10-0. Goals were easy to come by in the match for the Lakers as Madeline Becker lead the team in scoring with three goals, all coming in the first half. This was the freshman’s first hat trick since joining the Lakers this fall.

Team speed and depth help GVSU Cross Country to strong showing at Loyola Lakeside

With ideal running conditions at 50 degrees and sunshine, the men and women both managed to have runners finish first and second collegiality among all competitors. Senior Zach Panning finished first with an 8k time of 23:48, while sophomore Enael Woldemichael took second with a time of 23:51. Sarah Berger finished first with a 5k time of 16:57 and Allie Ludge was right behind her at 16:58 for the women’s team.

Battle tested: GVSU volleyball splits weekend matches

The first game against Northwood on Friday, Sept. 28 was a clean 3-0 sweep for the Lakers improving their overall record to 11-5. The Lakers scored 25-12, 27-25, and 25-2. GVSU had very balanced offensive to defensive strategies against the Timberwolves. Overall, the Lakers led in kills (45-34), assists (37-33), blocks (six-two) and digs (69-54). Quickly shutting Northwood out the first game kept momentum high and gave the Lakers an advantage over the next two sets that would help them beat Northwood in stats and score.

GVSU men's golf performs well, Mitchell White earns GLIAC Golfer of the Week

The Grand Valley State University men’s golf team traveled to Findlay Country Club on Sept. 24 and 25 to participate in the Doc Spragg Fall Invitational. This is only the second tournament of the year for the Lakers, the first of which saw them take home the victory. This tournament would have a similar finish. On day one of the tournament, GVSU shot a 291 as a team, good enough to put them in second place going into the final round. The only team to perform better was the University of Indianapolis, with UIndy shooting a 288.
