Thomas soars, GVSU track and field wins Mike Lints Alumni Open

Isaiah Thomas’ new record in the long jump highlighted a strong outing for the Grand Valley State track and field teams as they cruised to victories at the Mike Lints Alumni Open Saturday, Jan. 28 at the Kelly Family Sports Center. The men tallied 114.66 points to beat runner-up Indiana Tech (65). The women totaled 120.25 points as they edged out GLIAC opponent Hillsdale (83.25).

Men take first, women take second at GVSU Open

The Grand Valley State men’s track and field team put on a strong performance at home at the GVSU Open Friday, Jan. 20. They edged out South Florida by 19 points to take first place with a score of 130.33, while the women’s team took second, totaling 128 points and falling just short of Eastern Michigan.

He holds a Grand Valley State track and field record, finished 2016 as a top-five cross country runner nationally, received All-American honors more than once and yet he’s only a sophomore. Laker distance star Zach Panning has proven he is one of the best, but unless you’re his teammate, his friend, or one of the numerous opponents he’s whizzed past during a race, you probably wouldn’t be able to pick him out of a crowd.

GVSU indoor track preview 2016-17

It’s known as the triple crown—winning a national championship in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field during the same school year. This season, fresh off Grand Valley State’s fifth women’s cross country national championship, the women's track and field team has its eyes set on that elusive goal. They would be only the second team ever with that achievement, joining the 2010-11 Laker women.

GVSU track & field alumna finds success

Kelsey Young may have finished her track and field career, but she’s just getting started with her personal training career. The former Grand Valley State athlete opened Great Escape Fitness LLC in northwest Grand Rapids this past May. The fitness center’s primary goal is to help clients develop power, strength, endurance and flexibility through individual-focused workouts and a team-like atmosphere.
