In its most tightly contested game of the season thus far, the Grand Valley State University women’s basketball team came up just short of defeating the No. 4 Michigan Tech University Huskies.
The Lakers (14-4, 11-2 GLIAC) took the Huskies all the way into two overtime periods, but the Huskies managed to snatch a last second 75-71 victory.
Junior GVSU forward Kara Crawford hit a layup at the end of regulation to tie the game at 52 and force the first overtime.
Sophomore Laker guard Emma Veach, who finished the game with a team high 19 points and nine rebounds, forced a turnover late in the first overtime period and hit a 3-pointer to give the Lakers a two point lead. Husky forward Katie Wysocky hit a contested layup to force a second overtime period.
Wysocky finished with a game high 21 points and 14 rebounds.
The Lakers hit the first bucket of the final period, but the Huskies answered with a game tying bucket. After Michigan Tech took the lead behind a Wysocky jumper, the Lakers never regained the lead.
Wysocky had eight of Michigan Tech’s final 14 points.
The Lakers will host Northern Michigan University on Saturday. The Wildcats are the only team to have beaten the Huskies this season.
