Four Lakers earn weekly GLIAC honors

Four Grand Valley State University student-athletes were awarded weekly GLIAC honors this week.

Senior pole vaulter Kristen Hixson (Outdoor Field “Athlete of the Week”) broke her own school record over the weekend by clearing a height of 4.23 meters, the best mark in all of the NCAA Division II this season.

Senior first baseman Giancarlo Brugnoni (Baseball “Player of the Week”) went 9-for-14 in five games last week and notched a pair of back-to-back home runs, 11 RBIs, a 1.143 slugging percentage and a .762 on-base percentage. He was also named the NCBWA National Hitter of the Week on Wednesday.

Sophomore starter Lauren Gevaart (Softball “Pitcher of the Week”) won all three of her starts in Allendale against a trio of conference opponents with a combined ERA of 0.64. She posted a pair shutouts and struck out 22 batters in 22 innings of work.

Freshman midfielder Ryan Skomial (Women’s Lacrosse “Athlete of the Week”) scored seven goals and had two assists in a pair of conference wins over the weekend. Additionally, she racked up 10 ground balls — a single-game GVSU record — in the team’s win against Tiffin University.
