The Grand Valley State University baseball team could not have hoped for a better start to the GLIAC season.

The Lakers (15-2, 4-0 GLIAC) took all four weekend games on the road against Lake Erie College (7-8, 0-4 GLIAC). They were the first games in more than two weeks for the team, but GVSU played like they were in midseason form, outscoring the Storm 32-8 in the series.

GVSU starting pitcher Kyle Schepel, who go the win in the final game of the series, said all areas of the team played at the top of their game.

“All the pitchers have been throwing really well,” he said. “The defense has been really good, and when the offense is clicking as well, that makes it easy for the pitchers to go out there and get the guys out.”

The two teams had to battle the weather as well, as highs for both Saturday and Sunday were only in the low 30s. GVSU has played 17 games now this season, but these were the first four played such a cold climate.

“If you weren’t playing it was ridiculously cold,” Schepel said. Even if you were playing it was pretty cold, but we just put on as many layers as we could to try and stay warm.”

Now that the conference season has begun, the Lakers will be playing seven games in five days, starting this Saturday at Ashland University. Schepel said the team hopes to use the momentum it gained from this weekend’s games in their four tilts against Ashland.

“It’s a confidence booster starting the GLIAC off like that,” he said. “It’s nice to get some wins under our belt, especially four right away is big because we’ve got the Ashland series.”
