Arts briefs 10/30/17

Rabbi Sarra Lev will be coming to Grand Valley State University to host an interactive discussion about gender in the Jewish creation story. The event, titled "How Many Genders in the Jewish Creation Story?" is LIB 100- and 201-approved and will be held Monday, Nov. 6, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the Mary Idema Pew Library Learning and Information Commons.

Latino Student Union to hold annual dinner dance

The Latino Student Union (LSU) invites Grand Valley State University students to enjoy the Sábado Gigante dinner dance Friday, Nov. 3, at 8 p.m in the Kirkhof Center Grand River Room. The event promises a re-creation of the popular Spanish-language reality show "Sábado Gigante," the longest-running television variety series ever. There will be food provided and an open dance floor later in the evening.

Guest cello recital to highlight the influence of Bach

While composer Johann Sebastian Bach may be known for his grand orchestral movements, sometimes overlooked are his cello compositions. These pieces of music, made for the solo cello player, are what inspired cellist Christopher Hutton to bring the pieces and their lasting influence to the stage.  Coming to Grand Valley State University Friday, Nov. 3, Hutton will be performing his set at the Haas Center for Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m.

'Drop-In Studio' lets GVSU students replicate Islamic art

Celebrating Islamic art, geometric designs and hands-on experience, the Grand Valley State University Haas Center for Performing Arts will be hosting a "Drop-In Studio" in the Art Gallery.  At the event, there will be Islamic art, tea and a welcoming environment. The drop-in sessions, happening at different times from Tuesday, Oct. 24, through Friday, Oct. 26, are free and open to the public.
