Hauenstein Center puts on Common Ground event to honor MLK Jr.’s legacy

Grand Valley State University’s Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies will partner with the Division of Inclusion and Equity to present “Race and the American Dream,” a Common Ground Initiative event, Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. in the L.V. Eberhard Center. The event is scheduled as part of GVSU’s Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Week to honor King’s life and legacy.

Apollo 1 astronaut Roger B. Chaffee to be honored at symposium

Grand Valley State University is partnering with the Grand Rapids Public Museum to honor the astronauts tragically killed in the Apollo 1 incident in 1967. Events are scheduled Friday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 11 at the L. V. Eberhard Center as part of a 50th anniversary symposium titled “Roger That! A Celebration of Space Exploration in Honor of Roger B. Chaffee.”

Toast with T. Haas celebrates GVSU graduates

As dozens of champagne bottles popped and students conversed over drinks and appetizers, Grand Valley State University’s fall 2016 graduating class raised a glass to the end of their undergraduate careers. With over 400 students registered for the Toast with T. Haas event at the L.V. Eberhard Center at GVSU’s Pew Campus last Thursday, Dec. 8, congratulations were thrown out by Laker for a Lifetime volunteers to GVSU’s newest alumni.

GVSU students collect winter gear to donate to homeless shelter in Grand Rapids

Though Grand Valley State University includes a select amount of students, faculty and personnel, the areas surrounding campus include a wider variety of people. Some of those people, like some GVSU students, are disadvantaged or even homeless. The specific problem of homelessness is something that a few students in professor Brandon Youker’s BSW 317 social work class looked to address.

Lakers give back for Giving Tuesday

The end of November is reserved for some of the most chaotic days of the year. To combat the madness of Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday focuses on helping others. Grand Valley State University’s Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy teamed up with the city of Grand Rapids to introduce a new Giving Tuesday initiative called GRgives.

Though service learning is often an essential part of the college academic experience, it often goes much further for students. Gilda’s Club of Grand Rapids tries to make this happen for many students at Grand Valley State University. In fact, it has become the basis for a strong partnership between the two.
