Arts briefs 4/2/18

Plans for the 2018 season of the Grand Valley State University Shakespeare Festival are already underway. This year’s performances will be “King Lear” and “Bard to Go.” There are casting opportunities for all students regardless of major or minor. Backstage duties are also available.

Documentary on Vietnamese re-education camps offers learning opportunity

There are many untold stories about armed conflicts worldwide, and the Grand Valley State University Veterans History Project aims to tell those tales. GVSU students are invited to join them for a showing of “Unforgotten,” a documentary about Vietnamese survivors of re-education camps. The showing is set for Monday, April 2, at 6:30 p.m. in the DeVos Center Loosemore Auditorium.

GVSU students advance in pitch competition

In early January, four Grand Valley State University students submitted their ideas to the Outdoor Weber Idea Pitch Competition, hosted by Weber State University. All four of them are now headed to Ogden, Utah, to present their ideas to a series of mentors and judges who will then determine a winner. The winner, chosen from a pool of 10, will get $30,000 to bring their idea to life.

The Grand Valley State University women, gender and sexuality (WGS) studies department is set to host a celebration in honor of March being Feminist History Month on Wednesday, March 28, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center, Room 2270.

The Nonprofit Graduate Student Organization at Grand Valley State University is set to kick off the season with the Networking Over Dinner event on Friday, March 16, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the DeVos Center’s University Club (Room 107C).

Opioid panel to discuss experiences, effects of drugs

Opioid addiction is not a discriminatory disease. It crops up in both cities and suburbs, oblivious to the different demographics of its victims. Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) is hosting a panel to discuss stigmas and the opioid epidemic at 6 p.m. in the DeVos Center Loosemore Auditorium on Thursday, March 22.

VMA student exhibition showcases various disciplines, department unity

The Department of Visual and Media Arts Student Exhibition showcases student work on a variety of levels, ranging from art across multiple disciplines to the curation of the show itself. The exhibition, which will be held in the Padnos Student Art and Design Gallery from now until Friday, March 30, features work selected by faculty from various disciplines within the Department of Visual and Media Arts (VMA).
