College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to host alumni speakers on campus

To serve as a bridge between the classroom and the work room, Grand Valley State University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) is holding a series of lectures hosted by the Distinguished Alumni-in-Residence Program. Speakers from 13 CLAS departments will be on GVSU campuses Thursday, Oct. 26, and Friday, Oct. 27, to share their experiences as Laker alumni.

GVSU hosts panel on violence against women

Given that domestic violence, sexual assault and gender equity continue to be prevalent issues throughout the U.S. and across the globe, Grand Valley State University gave several speakers the opportunity to address these issues Monday, Oct. 23, as part of a panel on violence against women.

GVSU environmental professor studies beekeeping in Slovenia

In September, Anne Marie Fauvel, adviser for the Grand Valley State University Beekeepers club and professor of environmental studies and liberal studies, traveled beyond the fields of Western Michigan to Slovenia, in central Europe, to further her professional development. It was there that she learned more about beekeeping and additional beekeeping management practices.

Grand Rapids considered for Amazon Headquarters location

Whether they're buying books, clothing or kitchen utensils online, almost everyone is familiar with the online shopping superpower Amazon.com. As of right now, there is only one Amazon headquarters, which is located in Seattle.  However, that is scheduled to change as the online shopping giant is currently in the process of evaluating different locations for a second home, and Grand Rapids is a potential contender.

Grand Valley State University will host a one-day seminar on the topic of being inclusive in the classroom and in the community Friday, Nov. 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m in the Kirkhof Center Grand River Room. Deepa Iyer, senior fellow at the Center for Social Inclusion in New York City will lead the event.

Bringing history to life

While there are many forms of teaching, finding exciting new ways to involve students can be challenging. Recognizing this, David Eick, associate professor of French literature and European culture at Grand Valley State University, uses the "Reacting to the Past" (RTTP) pedagogy in his classroom to teach students about significant events in European history and to strengthen language acquisition skills in his French classes.
