Alcohol a factor in crash near GVSU; four injured

The crash happened just before 11 p.m. Thursday on Pierce Street near 52nd Avenue in Allendale Township. According to Grand Valley State Police, a 19-year-old GVSU student from Rochester, Mich. was turning left into the Mystic Woods Apartment complex when another car attempted to pass on the inside and caused the collision.

Laker Guardian app expands student safety efforts

In an effort to ensure campus safety and easy access to emergency services, Grand Valley State University has recently updated their Laker Guardian app and encourage students and faculty to download it on their mobile devices.  Have you ever been afraid to walk from class to your car? Do you get worried during your past-dark workouts? Have you ever been on a first date that’s left you feeling uncomfortable? Now, thanks to a collaboration between the Grand Valley Police Department and RaveGuardian, the Laker Guardian app provides students with a virtual buddy when safety concerns arise.

Law enforcement is concerned about a recent city-wide development involving individuals targeting houses, cars and people using paintball guns. These “paintball wars” are on the rise across many cities and pose a troubling issue for community members who wish to keep their neighborhood streets safe.

Student organizations work to raise sexual assault awareness

Sexual assault is a serious and prevalent issue on college campuses across the U.S. Children grow up learning strategies that are meant to protect them from that very threat, such as avoiding walking alone in the dark, never leaving drinks unattended and carrying around a bottle of pepper spray, among other things.  In 2009, former President Barack Obama declared the month of April Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), and at Grand Valley State University, many student organizations are stepping up to the plate, educating fellow students and spreading awareness.

1 in 5 Americans has participated in protests since 2016, study finds

Since 2016, numerous protests and marches have taken place across the country, many of them dealing with issues viewed as being related to President Donald Trump. But just how many Americans are actually protesting, and what do these modern movements look like compared with the protests of 50 years ago?
