Student senate requests an extra $50,000 for the student life fund to meet expanding student needs

At the beginning of each school year, Grand Valley State University’s student senate receives a budget that they then allocate to different organizations on campus depending on requests heard from those organizations. However, most of these organizations do not receive all of the money they request. To help better meet student needs, GVSU’s student senate has requested to add $50,000 to the student budget.

Transnationalism lecture kicks off new global studies major

To celebrate the launch of the new global studies and social impact major, Arifa Javed, a professor of sociology at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, spoke about transnationalism and global citizenship in the new millennium Thursday, Nov. 17. She spoke for an hour in Grand Valley State University’s Cook-DeWitt Auditorium to a room full of about 100 people.

FAFSA opens earlier for 2017-18 school year

Normally, students begin filling out their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) after January, when their parents have an idea of how much money they can say they’ve made in a year. But this year, the U.S. Department of Education opened the FAFSA Saturday, Oct. 1, allowing students more time to fill it out by using their parents' 2015 tax information instead of their most recent tax filing.

Donald Trump named 45th U.S. president

For the fifth time in U.S. history, the presidential nominee who won the popular vote did not become the president-elect Tuesday, Nov. 8. With 47.5 percent of the popular vote and 279 Electoral College votes, businessman Donald J. Trump will be the 45th American president.
