GVSU softball picks up two road wins against No. 15 Wayne State

The No. 8 ranked Grand Valley State women’s softball team continued their dominant 2019 campaign this weekend, defeating No. 15 Wayne State twice in Detroit, winning the first game 5-0 and the second game 11-2. Senior pitcher Allison Lipovsky added yet another brilliant performance to her lengthy pitching resume in the first game of the doubleheader, going all seven innings for the Lakers while only allowing two hits and two walks and striking out ten Warriors in the contest.

Seven Lakers participate in GVSU football pro day

Every athlete dreams of one day suiting up for a professional team and on Thursday, March 21, several men made a step toward making that dream a reality as Grand Valley State held their annual pro day at the Kelly Family Sports Center. Quarterback Bart Williams, wide receiver Nick Dodson, offensive lineman David Dawson, defensive linemen Dylan Carroll and Kwanii Figueroa, linebacker Tyree Horton and defensive back Jacob Studdard participated representing the Lakers.

Lipovsky throws no hitter; GVSU softball sweeps weekend doubleheader

Grand Valley State softball headed home from their latest match victoriously on Saturday, March 16.  No. 10 GVSU travelled to Cedarville, Ohio to take on the No. 19 Cedarville Hornets in a clash of two teams who have been playing a high level of softball over the past few weeks. Going into the doubleheader, both Cedarville and GVSU were 8-1 in their last nine games.

Sweet 16: Laker women win two to advance

For the first time since 2016, the Grand Valley State women’s basketball team is on to the Sweet 16.  The No. 3 seeded Lakers beat up on the No. 2 seed Lewis 72-55 on Saturday, March 16 to punch their ticket to the regional semifinal after defeating No. 6 Truman State 89-64 the day before.

GVSU tennis captures eight total wins in annual spring trips

After a dominant fall season for both the Grand Valley State men’s and women’s tennis teams ending in late October, the teams headed down to Orlando to jump into their spring season. The women started off on Sunday, March 3 against East Carolina, ultimately ending in a loss after a tough battle in the Florida heat. On Monday, the women played a double header, first against North Carolina Wesleyan, pulling away with their first win of the week.

GVSU wins GLIAC, punches ticket to NCAA tournament

Going into the GLIAC tournament, no one in their right mind would have predicted that No. 7 Grand Valley State, a team who was 12-11 after losing to No. 3 Wisconsin-Parkside in overtime exactly one month ago, would comeback to beat the Rangers in a buzzer-beating win in the GLIAC semifinals to earn an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2009, and then go on to win the GLIAC tournament.

GVSU upset in conference semifinal

The top seeded hosts of the GLIAC women’s basketball tournament – the Grand Valley State Lakers – were upset by the No. 4 seed Northern Michigan Wildcats on Saturday, March 9 at Fieldhouse Arena 47-38. With the loss, the Lakers will not have an opportunity to play in the GLIAC tournament championship game despite winning the regular season title, their first in 13 years. Coming into the game, the Wildcats were one of two teams to defeat the Lakers in the 2018-19 season and had also held them to their three lowest point totals of the entire season – 50, 43 and now 38.

GVSU 'Sawyers' pick up key wins against Northern, Michigan Tech

The Grand Valley State men’s basketball picked the perfect time of year to start playing their best brand of basketball, as after previously losing to Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech this season, they dominated at the Fieldhouse Arena, beating Northern 85-62 on Thursday, Feb. 21 before beating Michigan Tech 71-53 on Saturday, Feb. 23.
